"Next to theology, I give to music the highest place of honour. Music is the art of the prophets, the only art that can calm the agitations of the soul. It is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us." ... Martin Luther

A Word from CTK’s Director of Music..

I am pleased to be a part of the church ministry and look forward to giving praise to our God. craig jones, director of musicAt age 14 I began playing church services in San Diego. My grandfather, an exceptional artist, taught me organ and piano. He was a choir master for well over 60 years performing mostly on the East coast. I subsequently earned a Masters in performance. My other duties include being a staff member both at Reed Institute and Multnomah Bible College teaching jazz studies and harmonic concepts. In addition to teaching private students, studio work, and vocal coaching, I enjoy photography, exercise at the local gym, and anything creative. May God grant his blessings to us.

Open Invitation to All

Praising the Lord in music is important. The Lord has blessed us in so many ways and often we overlook these gifts. One way of giving thanks to our Lord is by singing in the choir. Being able to read music is NOT a requisite.

Weekly rehearsals are held Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30 pm. We perform a variety of musical styles, including traditional, contemporary, and gospel. I will be teaching a few classes on sight reading, rythmic concepts, and worship music practices to all who are interested. Classes will be held at CTK, times to be arranged.

If you have any interest in participating in the choir, or singing/playing a solo, please contact me through the church office.

Please take a few moments and ask the Lord for his help and guidance. I’m excited about our music program for 2007-2008.

May God’s peace be with you!

What is "Contemporary Music?"

When asked the style of worship we incorporate at our church, I often respond “traditional.” When asked what style of music we incorporate, my response is “contemporary.” Another often asked question centers around the use of hymns. Hymns in themselves are neither traditional nor contemporary. It is how they are presented that makes them traditional or contemporary. Some of our more progressive musical worship bands see the value in many great hymns. It is their presentation that makes them contemporary. Contemporary merely means “occurring in the modern” or “of the day”.

For the past fifty years worship was “contemporary”. Ideally worship would not be categorized as traditional, contemporary, or blended. Worship is worship. It hasn’t changed since man was created. What is contemporary worship? Simply the same as it has been since Jesus walked here on earth. It is giving honor and praise to his Father in heaven. It is living lives in obedience to His word and His call on your life.
